Process
ขั้นตอนWhere do you start with making a song? From songwriting to release
You don’t need a room full of equipment to start making a song. Begin with something you want to say, a feeling you want the listener to have, or a short melody that’s stuck in your head. Then develop it into a song with a clear direction.
Making a song broadly involves writing, arranging, preparing vocals and instrumental sounds, mixing, mastering and getting ready to release it. You can return to earlier stages and make changes. This isn’t a checklist that prevents you from going back.
If you're working through these stages with a song, 20studio is where we can continue the conversation. Talk to us
Find the heart of the song
Before writing, ask what the song is about and who you want to hear it. The answer might be a single feeling, such as missing someone on the way home. That gives your choice of words, melody and rhythm a shared focus.
The lyrics don’t have to explain everything at once. Choose an image or a line that helps the listener understand the feeling, then try singing it. Words that read smoothly can be difficult to sing. Simple words can sometimes carry the feeling more directly.
Give each sound a job
Arrangement means deciding which sounds belong in each part of the song and what they do. The opening verse might leave room for the vocal, while the chorus adds energy through rhythm or harmonies. Adding instruments isn’t the only way to make a song interesting. Sometimes taking a sound away makes the important part clearer.
Prepare the sounds before mixing
Once you have the vocals and instrumental sounds, listen to how each part works in the song. Timing that doesn’t fit, unwanted noise or unclear pronunciation deserve attention before mixing. Some problems are better addressed at their source than hidden at a later stage.
What’s the difference between mixing and mastering?
Mixing shapes the relationships between sounds: their levels, left-to-right positions, frequencies and sense of space. The aim is to help the parts work together and make the song’s message clear.
Mastering works with the final mix, considering the overall sound and preparing files for release. For a collection of songs, it can also involve checking how consistently they play together. Mastering is more than making a track louder, and it won’t solve every problem left in a mix.
What should you check before release?
Listen to the final file from beginning to end. Check for audio dropouts, misplaced silence or an ending that cuts off. Listen on different devices to find things worth checking again. You don’t need to make every device sound identical.
Check that the song title, artist name, credits and cover art are consistent too. For file formats and required information, check your distributor’s current requirements. If the service asks about AI use, describe the actual process truthfully.
Do you have to do every stage yourself?
No. You might take on several roles yourself or work with others. What matters is understanding the decision you’re making and the files needed for the next stage. Knowing what each stage does helps you communicate clearly, even when you aren’t doing everything yourself.
